Strengthening Detroit, Michigan Chapter: Robotics and Community Science
November was a dynamic month for the Detroit chapter, as we advanced our mission with a concentrated focus on robotics education paired with community science projects designed to connect learning with real-world issues.
Programs and Events

Robotics Basics & Team Challenges
Students from local middle schools participated in weekly robotics workshops, learning to build and program robots using VEX and LEGO Mindstorms kits. These sessions culminated in team challenges that fostered collaboration and creativity.

Community Science Projects
We introduced projects addressing urban challenges, such as water quality testing and air pollution monitoring, using simple sensors and data collection techniques. Students presented their findings to local community leaders in a public science fair.

Curriculum Integration
Lessons incorporated elements from our core curriculum on human health, environmental science, and engineering principles, making science relevant and accessible.
Volunteer and Community Engagement
Our Detroit chapter saw increased involvement from local STEM professionals and college students, who served as mentors and judges for the science fair. Partnerships with local nonprofits and schools strengthened, providing resources and facilities for ongoing programs.
